CFM: It is Finished

This week we will be reviewing the big events from the life of Christ and singing about them.  I put together a picture timeline and matched each story with a primary song we've been working on throughout the year.  On Sunday I plan to scatter the pictures up on the board and let the kids rearrange them in chronological order.

If you tie a string across the room, you can hang the pictures with clothes pins or something decorative to give it more of a "timeline" feel.

I left the titles blank so the songs revolving around each story of Christ can be customized to whatever hymn is most meaningful to you.

Download Timeline PDF HERE.

Here's my list of songs I chose for each scene:
Birth - Samuel Tells of the Baby Jesus
Baptism - Baptism
Apostles fishing - Come Follow Me
Sermon on the Mount - Love One Another
Atonement - Gethsemane
Cross - To Think about Jesus
Resurrected Christ and Mary - I Know That My Redeemer Lives
Christ in the clouds - When He Comes Again

CFM: Be Not Afraid

There are so many great scripture stories in this week's lesson.  Sometimes simple is best.  It's nice to just cuddle together on the couch and tell the stories of Jesus.  That's what we did this week.

We talked about when Peter tried to walk on the water.  This is one of my most favorite faith-testing scripture stories of all time.

Everyone munched on bread and fish while we went through the stories of Christ's miracles.

My yoke is easy and my burden is light
Mosiah is my favorite book in the Book of Mormon.  I love where Alma's people are in bondage and their burdens are made light.  This is so real.  I have experienced this where a trial I am experiencing is lighter than it should be, where the emotional weight no longer controls my life and I can find pure, pure joy in my hardest challenges because of the aid of my Savior.

For our activity we filled T's backpack with some of his heavy books.

It was funny watching him trying to carry it around without falling.

We then went through his load and took out the books one by one.  Each book was sticky-tacked with a different emoticon.  We talked about all of the different ways we might feel down and how we can turn to Christ to help us ease those burdens.  And before you know it--BAM!  The backpack was light as a feather!

WHEN I AM AFRAID OR IN DANGER, JESUS CAN HELP ME FEEL PEACE
I'm cheating a little bit and using the activity from the Come Follow Me-- for Primary

Give each child a paper rain cloud, and ask them to write on it a trial that someone might have.  Put all of the clouds on the board, covering a picture of the Savior.   Invite a child to remove one of the clouds and suggest ways we could help someone with that trial to find peace.  When all the clouds are removed, testify of the Savior's power to calm the storms in our lives.

Download my cloud printable HERE.

It may be fun to make a homemade storm as a family.  Use rain sticks, shakers, snapping, or thunder audio on Youtube for your sound and be creative with flashlights or strobe lights for lightning. ⛈

Opening Song: To Think about Jesus

Heavenly Father shows His love for me through Jesus Christ.
The sacrament provides a time to reflect on the love of God and the gift of His Son.  What hymns help you feel this love?  What could you do to make the sacrament more meaningful?

On Sundays I like to leave the songbook open on my lap after we sing the sacrament hymn.  While the sacrament is being passed I reread the lyrics to help feel the spirit and focus on the Savior.  For the lesson each family member can pick their favorite sacrament hymn to sing.  You can never have too much singing.

Christ offers me His living water.
As we talked about the woman at the well, we had our son pour everyone a cup of water.
Oh. Snap.

Nothing makes me more nervous than a toddler pouring a pitcher.  ðŸ˜‚ Don't worry, he only ended up spilling half the container.

John 2-4
As your family reads these chapters this week, pay special attention to how the Savior used everyday things--birth, wind, water, and food--to teach spiritual truths.  What items in your home can you use to teach spiritual truths?

I made a printable card game HERE of different objects in the home.  The family can take turns picking a card and trying to come up with a "spiritual truth" parable.

Opening Song: I Am a Child of God

When Satan tempted Christ to turn a stone to bread, he challenged Christ’s divine identity by saying, “If thou be the Son of God” (Matthew 4:3, italics added). Why does Satan try to make us doubt our divine identities? How does he try to do this? (See also Moses 1:10–23.)

A fun "about me" poster project can help family members reflect on who they are and how they are each unique individual daughters and sons of God.

To prepare for His mission, Jesus went into the wilderness "to be with God".

Our family is BIG-BIGGY-BIG nature enthusiasts.  It's kind of a prerequisite of living in the PNW.  Depending on weather, we may just go out on a nature walk for our activity.

If the weather is crummy I plan on having this scene playing in the background during our lesson:

It seems to always be in nature where people go for the most spiritual experiences: Christ when He fasted, Nephi, Enos, the brother of Jared, Moses, Joseph Smith.

Have you ever heard of "Earthing"?  Try and touch a piece of nature everyday.  Take your shoes off and lie in the grass.  Being more in touch with mother earth is a wonderful way to draw closer to your Heavenly Father.

When have you felt the Savior calling you to follow Him? How can you show the Lord that you are willing to “[forsake] all” (Luke 5:11) to follow Him?

I once gave a lesson for the Young Women where we discussed the Anti-Nephi-Lehites who covenanted with the Lord and buried their weapons in the earth.  I made them their own swords that they could make a personal promise with God and "bury" their sword.  I love the symbolism of letting go and giving yourself to Christ.

THE LIGHT SHINETH IN DARKNESS
Ah, yes.  Pictionary is a perfect go-to lesson time filler activity.  But have you ever experienced FLASHLIGHT Pictionary?

Step one: Wait until it's dark
Step two: Grab your camera and change the settings for long exposure (make the shutter stay open for 10 seconds or so)
Step three: Take turns with a flashlight painting a picture while the camera records you

I went through the scripture reading and found easy Pictionary words throughout the chapter that each team can guess.

WE ARE THE MOON

Pops got me a super cool moon lamp for Christmas.  We turned off the lights and let T hold the glowing orb.  I tried to explain that the Savior is like the sun and we are like the moon.  Christ is the light and we can reflect His light and share it with others.  I think he was too distracted staring at the lamp to hear what I was saying, but I thought the metaphor was dope.

We then went around and listed different ways that each of us could share our light with others.

Opening Song: The Nativity Song

Baby Jesus
Hopefully you haven't packed away all your Christmas decorations just yet.  This lesson is a great opportunity to pull out the nativity scene while telling the story of Baby Jesus.

Speaking of babies... Little T is at the perfect age where he's trying to grasp that Mom and Dad were once little kids too.  All the family baby pictures are coming out.  I'm hoping it'll help him understand that Jesus was once a little baby too.

Jesus in His youth
Luke 2:52 is one of my most favorite scriptures in the New Testament.
I did an entire Young Women's lesson on it years ago.  Find that lesson post HERE.

Jesus increased in wisdom and stature, and in favor with God and man.  We can discuss how when Christ was on the Earth he did regular things that all little kids do too.  He read books, he ran and played, he said his prayers, he read his scriptures, and had lots of friends.

I created a self-improvement worksheet where family members can evaluate how balanced out their life categories are.  Am I increasing in wisdom and stature and favor with God and man?

Parents can receive revelation to protect their families
When we learn of what Joseph did to keep his family safe it could segue into a great discussion about the safety rules we have in our family.  When I was a kid, I remember my family had a "safety tree" across the street from our house where we all would meet if the house was on fire.  Strangers, emergencies, all the danger talks...

Father's Business Jar
Straight from the manual:
Consider writing down some ways your family can participate in the Father’s business and placing them in a jar. During the coming week, when your family is looking for ways to do Heavenly Father’s work, they can select ideas from the jar. Plan a time when you will share your experiences.

Click HERE for a free printout of "My Father's Business Jar".  It includes a jar label, cut-outs with family activities, and blank cut-outs to fill in your own.

CFM: We Are Responsible for Our Own Learning

Come Follow Me--For individuals and Families
Family lesson ideas while studying with little ones

The Books in the New Testament
For our opening hymn we wanted to review what we'll be learning over the course of the year.  I had all the book names mixed and shuffled around on the floor so we could work together to organize the New Testament in order.  I would sing through the song a couple of times because if I learned anything in primary, it's that repetition is magic.

The hymn from the primary songbook can be found HERE.

You're Invited...

Print and fold a "party invitation" enveloped to the family.  It is an invitation from Jesus to "Come follow me."  It can be a great opportunity to share the scripture story from Matthew 19 of the rich young man who asked Christ what he needed to do to have eternal life.  Explain how we are ALL invited to follow the Savior's example.

Download Come Follow Me Invitation PDF HERE.

What do you feel inspired to do to be more active in learning the gospel?
On New Year's Eve one of our family traditions has been to take pictures with our personal resolutions.  We decided to twist it a bit to fit into our Sunday lesson.  Each family member took the opportunity to reflect and decide what they wanted to work on to grow spiritually or to be more Christlike in 2019.

Parable of the Sower
This idea comes straight from the Come Follow Me manual:
One great way to help your family prepare to learn from the New Testament this year is to review the parable of the sower. Your family might enjoy looking at different kinds of ground near your home to visualize the types of ground described in the parable. What can we do to cultivate “good ground” in our home? (Matthew 13:8).
My toddler loOoOoOoVes the dirt, so I think we were finally speaking his language.  After looking around the yard at the different ground types, it was a great opportunity to plant a family seed for in the home.  Together we promised to love and nurture it, and watch it grow into a family flower.

"Simon Says" Hearts
What kid doesn't love a good game of Simon Says?  After we played, we referred back to how Christ invited us to follow His example.  We reviewed all the wonderful things Jesus did when He was on the Earth and discussed how we can follow His righteous choices in the same way.

Download Hearts PDF HERE.  Each heart mentions something Christ did during his life that we can follow.  I also left some blank hearts for personal ideas.

Obviously, Come Follow Me had to be the closing hymn, right?

Last one!  Can you tell I'm SUPER excited for this new curriculum?  I made a blank program for each week if anyone out there is like me and loves writing things down to keep my thoughts organized.

Download blank CFM weekly program HERE.

Happy churching!  What a fun, inspired adventure we all get to adjust to.  I'm excited to work through the bugs and see what works and what doesn't as we strive more to teach the gospel within the wall of our home.

How Can I Prepare To Establish A Christlike Home?

Get this week's lesson here.

  • Divide the class into groups, and divide Elder Richard G. Scott’s talk “For Peace at Home” among the groups. Ask the groups to study their sections of the talk, looking for descriptions or characteristics of a Christ-centered home. Invite them to share what they find by drawing pictures of what a Christ-centered home is like. What can the young women do to help their homes be more Christ-centered now? How can they prepare to establish Christ-centered homes in the future?

Here's a simple outline of a home I made for the girls to draw their pictures.  Download a copy here.

For my visual aid I had a framed picture of Joseph Franklin Brickley's "They Did Not Doubt" and shared the story of the stripling warriors.

The Book of Mormon offers important lessons to families.  The account of the stripling warriors demonstrates the power of faith as it is passed from parent to child:  "Now they never had fought, yet they did not fear death; . . yea, they had been taught by their mothers, that if they did not doubt, God wold deliver them' (Alma 56:47).  This painting depicts a mother with her two stripling warrior sons, bidding them farewell as they leave to fight for the liberty of their people.  It represents the moment when every child must leave home and face the challenges of life.

I tried to emphasize to the girls that when they become mothers, Heavenly Father will one day be putting special spirits into their hands and trusting them to nurture their children physically as well as spiritually.  What an honor it will be to be given that trust to raise them carefully in a spiritual atmosphere.

Why Is It Important To Gain An Education? Why Does The Lord Want Me To Be Healthy?

I have been a major slacker this month.  So, to make up for it, I'm morphing this week into a DOUBLE LESSON!  BAM BAM KA-CHAOW!!!!!

Get the links to the actual lessons here:

WARNING:  I'm straying from the Come Follow Me manual this week and going my own direction with the subjects.  I think these areas are important and should be focused on individually, but I also feel like there's a bigger picture here that can encompass them as a whole.  And it compliments the month's theme of being self-reliant too.

When Christ was on the earth, He set the perfect example for us to follow.  We can study the scriptures and learn from the choices He made how we should act and live our lives.  But here's the thing… When Christ was in His youth, we hardly have any information about who He was.  We know the story of him in the temple when He was 12, but then there's a huge gap between then and His ministry when He was a lot older.
How can the young women relate to him during their teens?

This ONE scripture pretty much sums up his ENTIRE youth:

Luke 2:52
And Jesus aincreased in bwisdom and stature, and in cfavourwith God and man.

The footnotes for "favour" in this verse translates to "relationship."  We are told four things about the Savior during his teens:

 He increased in wisdom,
He increased in Stature,
He increased his relationship with God,
and He increased his relationship with man

Isn't that awesome?!?!  I LOVE THIS SCRIPTURE!  I love it because, to me, it shows that Christ was WELL BALANCED.  Yes, He was spiritual and spent his youth studying the scriptures and increasing his testimony, BUT he also was able to enjoy other activities.  He was physically active, he had a social life, and he gained knowledge and learned other things outside of the gospel!

When Doctrine and Covenants 58:26-28 talks about being anxiously engaged in a good cause and doing things of our own free will, it makes me happy knowing our Heavenly Father wants us to enjoy our lives and make our own choices to participate in uplifting activities that don't necessarily have to be completely church related.  He's happy when we're playing sports or when we join the school choir or when we dance or when we go bowling with our friends.  As long as it brings to pass righteousness, we are following our Savior's example and we are pleasing our Heavenly Father.

BALANCE

"You remember lesson about balance?  Lesson not just karate only.  Lesson for whole life.  Whole life have a balance.  Everything be better."
-Mr. Miyagi

Bob Mathias was the Olympic Decathlon gold medalist back in 1948 and 1952.  At age 17, he was the youngest gold medalist to win a track and field event.  My dad used to tell me about him.  You know why he was awesome?  He never came in first in any of his events.  "But Jesse, how can you win the decathlon without placing first in an event?" you may ask.  I'll tell you….
He was well-rounded.  Mathias would always place towards the top of each event.  Most people were ridiculously awesome in a single area, but lacked skill in others.  Bob was balanced and could keep up with the top athletes for each event without necessarily being "the star" of a single area.

Random side note: Ashton Eaton, who just won the Olympic Decathlon last year, went to my rival high school. So we totally competed at the same track meets.  No big deal…

Since we dissected that Luke verse earlier, we can split the lesson up into four categories
MENTAL-

Education is an important part of our Heavenly Father's plan to help us become more like Him.  Obtaining an education provides understanding and skills that can help us develop self-reliance.  Education will also prepare us for greater service in our families, the Church, and the world.

Assign the young women to read individually one of the five paragraphs from the "Education" section of For the Strength of Youth.  Ask them to explain to the class what they read, and discuss why it is important to work diligently now to gain a good education.  Invite the young women to think about and share their goals to gain an education.

PHYSICAL-

Good health is an important part of being self-reliant.  Safeguarding our health will allow us to fulfill our divine potential and serve others more effectively.  The way we treat our bodies affects our spiritual health and our ability to receive guidance from the Holy Ghost.  In order to preserve our health, we should obey the Word of Wisdom, eat nutritious food, exercise regularly, and get adequate sleep.

Christ learned from his earthly father, Joseph, how to be a carpenter.  Do you know how strong carpenters are?  Handling all that heavy wood and equipment every day?  My dad worked in a lumber yard before he left on his mission and because of it, he gained some major arm muscle.  Out of all the missionaries in the Barcelona mission field, he was undefeated at arm wrestling.  He even beat some kid who was a New York high school state wrestling champion.  And he wasn't this huge football player or anything.  He was all skin and bones.  I mean… Look at this guy!!

P.S.  Finding pictures of your parents and grandparents from before you were born is just fantastic.

I like the PHYSICAL HEALTH video this lesson includes.  It's a little long, but I love it when they show different perspectives of youth all around the world.  It's easy to get trapped in your own personal bubble and forget that there are others around you experiencing the same kinds of things.

SPIRITUAL-

We are daughters of our Heavenly Father, who loves us and wants us to draw near to Him.  He has given us the opportunity to pray to Him and has promised to hear and answer our prayers.  We can also come to know Him as we study the scriptures and the words of latter-day prophets and as we strive to become more like Him by following His will.

SOCIAL-  How can the girls work on their relationship with others?  Have the girls read the "Friendssection of For the Strength of Youth.

*****

My desire this week is for the girls to recognize the importance of balancing their lives.  If they find an area they're struggling with or trying to avoid, they should focus on improving it.  All these areas are important and things that Christ worked on developing as well.

You know the FIVE LOVE LANGUAGES quiz you can take to find your love language strengths?  I made a quiz kind of like that to help the girls find out the areas in life they need to work on.  I'm not a scientist or psychiatrist or whatever I need to be to make this a legit "studies show" type of test.  So, it might not actually mean anything logical.  But I thought it might be fun for the girls to help them determine what areas they need improvement in…
